Virgin sues Alitalia for unfair pricing

BRUSSELS – Brussels-based airline Virgin Express on Thursday announced that it has complained to the European Commission about its competitor Alitalia, which it claims is selling tickets at below cost price.

Virgin says state-backed Italian airline Alitalia, which is in severe financial difficulties, is deliberately selling tickets for flights linking Brussels with Milan and Rome at a loss.

“We have noticed that Alitalia is using commercial practices amounting to predatory pricing. They are specifically targeting routes which we operate,” the Financial Times newspaper quoted Virgin spokesman Yves Paneels as saying.

The European Commission is the EU’s competition watchdog and if it finds in Virgin’s favour it could slap a hefty fine on Alitalia.
