MADRID – Spain was still gripped by the controversy surrounding its exit from the Euro 2004 football championships Tuesday after team coach Iñaki Sáez announced he would not resign.

Spain crashed out of the tournament in its first round Sunday when they lost 1-0 to Portgual.

The team’s early departure  from the tournament prompted calls in the media in Spain for the team coach to resign.

But on Tuesday Sáez said he had decided to stay and revealed he had signed a contract for two more years before the tournament began.

The news has continued to lead the news bulletins in Spain, ahead of other stories about the inquiry into the 11 March terrorist massacre in Madrid and reforms in the laws relating to  domestic violence.

Sáez was expected to lead the Spanish team in their bid to win the 2006 World Cup.
